Seedball tin, Urban Meadow
A beautiful mix of native wildflowers that is perfect for pollinators, and also hardy to polluted urban areas.
The wildflower seeds are rolled into little balls with clay, compost and chilli powder (to deter predators). The seed balls can then be scattered on soil or compost to grow beautiful wildflowers.
Seedball tins make perfect gifts for lovers of nature and wildlife.
This colourful combination of annuals and perennials (cornflower, common toadflax, cowslip, meadow cranesbill, oxeye daisy, red campion and musk mallow) was developed in collaboration with River of Flowers - an eco-social enterprise working to create wildflower meadows in urban spaces for the benefit of pollinators and people.
Created by conservation scientists, Seedball tins offer a new twist on an ancient technique for seed propagation - helping to fill our gardens, balconies and window boxes with native wildflowers, bees and butterflies.
No need to plant, just scatter seed balls on a bare patch of soil and the ball will provide all the care and attention a seed needs.
The dried clay acts as a protective casing from common seed predators (such as ants, mice and birds). When sufficient rain permeates the clay, the seeds inside begin to germinate - helped along by the nutrients and minerals contained within the ball. The chilli powder continues to deter predators while the seed ball slowly degrades and the seeds sprout.
- Urban Meadow mix: cornflower, common toadflax, cowslip, meadow cranesbill, oxeye daisy, red campion and musk mallow.
- Clay ball (plus added chilli) naturally protects seed from predators, such as ants, birds and slugs.
- Easy to use - no need to 'plant', just scatter on top of soil or compost.
- Ideal for garden beds and planting pots.
- Each tin contains 20 seed balls. Each seed ball contains approximately 100 Urban Meadow mix seeds.
- For best results, scatter in the spring or autumn.
