Back once again for the #renegadeplantlife April 20, 2017 09:55

#Renegadeplantlife - a collective Instagram project celebrating the unruly, wild beauty of nature - is back! Some of you may remember the tag; it's about stopping to notice tenacious plant life - a plucky little plant growing from a crack in a wall or a pretty flower peeping out from the tarmac, for example.

Self-seeded plant by the roadside #Renegadeplantlife

The hashtag is a collective project over on Instagram that's about taking a moment to stop and notice nature - like this self-seeded plant growing by the roadside.

With the arrival of spring and Earth Day just around the corner, we thought it would be a good time to resurrect the project.

If you’re on Instagram, pop over and take a look at the feed. Everybody is welcome to join in - simply use the hashtag and tag @mimosastreet. We love seeing your #renegadeplantlife pics and will share our favourites in the feed and here on the blog.

Project Calm and Nature News March 24, 2017 08:05

Mimosa Street has been featured in Project Calm, a new magazine that's packed with creative ideas, contemporary craft projects and beautiful photography. We love the hand-lettering and vibrant illustrations on the cover (by Bristol-based artist Matilda Smith).

"Product collections at Mimosa Street are very carefully curated - you'll find beautiful gifts, accessories and objects for the home, many of which are handmade.

A special mention went to our vegan accessories edit (did you know that Mimosa Street has been recognised as a PETA-approved vegan brand?), including Susie Faulks's handmade oilcloth purses and the "bold botanical designs by up-and-coming designer India Johnson of Greengage Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne".

Washbags and multi-purpose pouches by Greengage Studios are all hand screen printed onto 100% unbleached cotton and feature original designs that are inspired by simple shapes such as heavy poppy heads or olives in a jar.

If you'd like to find out more about the creation of these beautiful handmade products, check out our interview with India Johnson, founder of Greengage Studios.

"With an emphasis on naturally-inspired and playful designs, their vegan purses and washbags are made from materials such as hardwearing oilcloth, recycled sacks and natural linen."

If you fancy some nature-inspired craft projects, news and stories, the latest issue of Project Calm is out now. We were featured in a round-up of nature news alongside Rebecca Desnos, whose new book, Botanical Colour at Your Fingertips, offers a guide to botanical dyeing and the colour potential of plants.

She's also about to launch a new magazine, Plants are Magic, which celebrates botanical creativity and explores the human relationship with plants.

There'll be articles on plant-based art, craft and food, plus contributions from all sorts of botanically creative people including natural dyers, herbalists, artists and makers. We can't wait to get our hands on a copy!

Plants are Magic magazine cover

"Plants are Magic is a magazine for makers, dreamers and plant lovers."

Rebecca's Instagram feed is a visual treat and you can find out more about the magazine on her website

Celebrating the creative journey October 14, 2015 16:37

Have you seen the #wipsandblooms tag on Instagram? It’s a place for makers and crafters to share pictures of their wips (works in progress) and seasonal blooms. It’s a really lovely idea – a celebration of nature, the handmade, and of the creative process itself.

While the creative journey can be crisscrossed with challenges and setbacks, these often beautiful and carefully considered pictures tend to have a soothing, more sedate quality and they capture something about the sense of contentedness that can come about through making.

Looking at the feed and comments, you also get a sense of the community that binds the makers behind these images.

#wipsandblooms prizes

The prize for October's #wipsandblooms pick includes a recycled glass vase, a poppy seedball tin and a lovely vintage-style pocket notebook. Pictured by Kate at A Playful Day.

The #wipsandblooms tag is co-hosted by @aplayfulday and @ceramicmagpie. If you’d like to get involved, take a photo of your work in progress (wip) and your favourite seasonal blooms (this month the theme is 'foraged'). Don't forget to use the hashtag and to tag the hosts.

Their favourite entry for October will win a bundle of little treats from Mimosa Street (pictured above). And if you don’t fancy taking part, you can still visit the #wipsandblooms feed for some creative inspiration.

Whatever you’re making this month, enjoy your creative journey.

PS. If you're on Instagram, you can find Mimosa Street here: @mimosastreet.

#Renegadeplantlife: an introduction September 17, 2015 09:59

It’s about noticing and celebrating the way that nature seems to thrive despite the odds sometimes being stacked against it. About stopping to take a moment to notice the little things: that plucky little plant growing from a crack in a wall or that pretty flower peeping out from the tarmac.

If you’re on Instagram, pop over and take a look at the feed, and feel free to join in! Simply use the hashtag and tag @mimosastreet. We love seeing your #renegadeplantlife pics and will share our favourites in the feed and on the blog.
